Spring is here, which means two things. Flowers will begin to bloom, livening up any gardens you may have planted. However, that also means the arrival of those pesky pollinators, the bees and wasps. No one likes finding hives on their property, as it can lead to a very expensive process in order to remove it. Bee and wasp removal is a delicate procedure, and how you go about it depends on the location of the nest. Here are some common locations, and how nests can be removed.
When a nest is located inside of the roof, customers will ask to have it removed by going through the attic. However, the best approach is to cut an opening in the roof and extract it that way. This is because crawling through the attic can be quite dangerous, not just for the remover but for the homeowner. The remover could slip and fall due to unstable footing, but also cause damage to electrical wires and piping.
Another location where the best approach is going from the exterior is in walls. Bees and wasps will sometimes build their nests inside of walls, both brick and wood. In these cases, going through the drywall may sound like the easiest method, but that can be quite a messy ordeal. Even if you have bee and wasp exterminators come in before the removal, there may still be a few stragglers inside the wall. This could give them an opportunity to enter the home, and that is the last thing a removal company wants.
If a nest is located under the floor or porch, then usually it is located in some crawlspace under the home. While crawling under the home for removal sounds like a good idea, the best way, again, is through the exterior side of the flooring. Crawling under the home limits the movement of the remover, and since they will be wearing a bee suit, this isn’t feasible.
Like most aspects, it is all about how you approach it. Coming in from above allows for better control when handling the nest and helps prevent honey dripping, causing messes.
Of course, there are always exceptions to rules. In this case, if removal from the exterior would be too expensive compared to the cautionary work needed to remove from the interior. As an example, older homes with specialized tiling can be tricky to work with when it comes to repair. Also, replacing some wall components, such as rocks or blocks, could be too costly if the removers came in from the exterior.
Spring is a time to celebrate the end of cold weather with visits to the beach or having family cookouts at home. However, if you notice hives around your home, don’t hesitate. Bees and wasps can be quite dangerous when they are angered. Unless you are a trained professional, you should not attempt to remove a nest on your own. Be sure to call a bee and wasp removal service immediately, to minimize the damage that could be done.
